In an exclusive interview with Heaven Mail, Award winning author and prolific teacher Swapna Behera talks to rameez Makhdoomi. Throw some light on overall personality of you as Swapna Behera? Swapna Behera is a post graduate in History with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.(M.A.BED) . She was a trained teacher in substance Abuse Prevention Education from Shalom Rehabilitation Centre Chumkedima Nagaland 2001. She is a trained teacher and participated in the workshop of School Audio Visual Script writing ,by School Audio Project 1991,sponsored by Ministry of Human Resource Development and a Yuva Jagat Artist of AIR She has the Microsoft Participation certificate in Partners in Learning Teacher Training Programme 2007 She has successfully participated in the ICH GCP Guidelines Training Programme in LV Prasad Eye Institute Bhubaneswar 14th December 2019 Swapna Behera born on 1955 is a trilingual contemporary poet, author ,educationist ,critic ,translator ,reviewer, a social worker, environmentalist ,peace activist and editor from Odisha ,India. Her stories ,poems and articles are widely published in Newspapers, International journals ,magazines Anthologies and ezines and translated in different languages . Swapna Behera is a former teacher for more than three decades i .e at the Mont Fort School from 1984-1995 and a teacher in Kendriya Vidyalayas, from 1995-2015 under Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan ,an Autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development ,Government of India .She has received several outstanding recognitions for teaching excellence . She retired as a teacher from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan , in July 2015. Your favourite writers? Each writer is a cosmic entity. I adore each but yes my favourite writers are Jayant Mohapatra for his dense and intricately textured languages .I am in love with his classic poem “Hunger ’’which is based on a true incident. He explores intricacies of human relationship. His poems deal with the life within where the Mind tries to find a sort of coherence from the mass of things in the world out side it . His poems speak of liberation .His poetic world is distinct and reflects the fragrances of Odisha may it be the famine of Kalahandi, loneliness of Konark .In hunger he writes about a fisherman who allows a man to have his fifteen year old daughter. His other poems scream , ,Dhauli , expresses terrible pain and agony. I love the poems of Keki Daruwallah, K satchidanadan ji .Pravasini ,Mahakud,Dr Aparna Mohanty,Dr Bibhu Pdhi ,Padmashri Haaladhar Nag,Santha kabi Bhima Bhoi ,Deepti Naval ji . How is Odhisa so rich in literary icons ? Odisha possesses rich cultural treasures .The sand art, the sculpture ,the temple arts,kandagiri Udaygiri , Dhauli stupa etc they speak a high legacy .Here the cultures mingle .The stone edicts speak peace .Rivers like Daya Nadi speaks the aesthetic legacy .Here the Nature itself is poetry as Odisha has lot of forest belts and coastal belts they are the eternal sources of creative songs ..There are literary renaissance in different time zones ..Jagannath culture has enriched the literature .Madhu Babu;s Barna Bodha ,the folk lore has great contribution A bit about your literary works? What are your favourite topics to write? : I am a product and bye product of the Greater society ;society has shaped me ,my culture ,my sensuality ,my values ,my vision ,my responsibilities and so do the reflections . But at the same time my poetry has its own audacity as I am too sensitive towards the teenager refugee girls at the refugee camps ,that’s why my poem “A night in the refugee camp ”is translated into 67 languages including some dialects .Some issues have the universal approach. My poems reflect Child abuse,human pain ,refugee camps, sustainability of mother nature ,environment and Greater Peace ,humanity at large .My theme reflects issues of society ,environment,water scarcity ,cosmic journey etc How do you see interest of youth in India towards literary traditions? I learn a lot from my contemporaries .They are apt in their own style .They are bold enough to speak a spade a spade .The younger generation is amazing too ,They are marching forward , The intensity of their voice is prominent, crystal clear, and they are fearless A good number of youth are involved in the grassroot level to solve the issues .so they have a broader vision .Globalisation and localisation have taken a mingling twist in their creativity which I appreciate . Being a teacher for years together I know the younger generation have tremendous potentialities .They are apt in technology ,they have stronger exposure with the global issues .They are the crisis managers and they live collectively .Any problem that comes they share and find a quick solution ,I respect them and their works. Social platform is giving an ample opportunity to each one to express, that is the boon of the modern era .The tears of each one is the concern of all .
