A minor girl was allegedly murdered by her father in Karnataka ‘s Ballari district in a suspected case of honour killing .

According to police officials, the alleged crime took place on October 31 in the district’s Kudathini town. The accused was identified by the police as Omkara Gowda.

The 15-year-old girl was reportedly in a relationship with a boy from a different faith. It was, however, not approved by Gowda.

The girl was also warned by Gowda to stay away from the boy. However, he continued to be suspicious of her daughter.

On October 31, around noon, Gowda took the minor girl on a motorcycle to watch a movie in a theatre, news agency  reported. When they reached the spot, the movie had already begun. Hence, Gowda took his daughter to a nearby eatery.

They later visited the Basaveshwara Temple. Gowda also bought the girl some jewellery before they returned home.

While returning in the evening, Gowda asked the girl to stay for a few minutes near the Tungabhadra canal as he had to attend to some work.

While the girl was waiting, Gowda pushed the girl into the canal from behind, killing her in the process, police officials said.

Gowda parked his motorcycle at his friend Bhimappa’s residence and boarded a train to the pilgrim city of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

Gowda was arrested by the police near Koppal when he returned from Tirupati. According to news agency, Gowda confessed to murdering his daughter.

A search was underway for the minor girl’s body in the canal.
