Sheikh Mudasir, who runs a free coaching centre for poor children at Baramulla old town and is engaged in diverse social welfare initiatives, speaks to Faizal Aziz about Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani
For decades, Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani was not given the recognition and honour he deserved by the Centre, or by our political leaders of Kashmir. I am in my mid 30s. All these years, I never ever saw National Conference, PDP or the Congress give the rutba to Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani that he had earned so truly and selflessly in the service of the nation. All these three governments were in power here. They had the full authority to give him the azmat that should have been given to him. Today, looking back, I feel deeply sad that this is such injustice to a legendary hero of Kashmir. Ye un ke saath bohot badi na-insafi hai.
Negligence Towards The Hero
What was the result of this deliberate negligence of the governments towards this great hero. The result is that the generations that were born after 1947 never knew about Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani the way they should have. This led to sad consequences in many ways.
One, Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani ke pehchaan ek din tak simat ke reh gayi. In collective social memory, the unparalleled contribution of this great hero got limited to that one single day of 1947. Nobody realized that Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani could have inspired successive generations of Kashmir to have love and devotion for the nation.
Every child of our motherland, every child of our beloved nation should be told of the heroic tale of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani so that he is inspired by the same ideals. Learning from Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani, every child of our nation should be ready to do his utmost to protect the aan, baan, shaan of our nation
Since 1947, if our successive generations had known about Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani, our vision would have been different. Our perspective would have been different. Kashmir’s destiny would have been different.
Was The Negligence Deliberate?
I now think that this negligence was deliberate. Our political leaders would always kow tow to the separatists. They always bent their knees before the separatists. Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani stood high above. He was like a shining star in his love for the motherland. Most of our political leaders were in darkness were true love of the nation was concerned. They practiced soft separatism. That is why they chose not to celebrate this fantastic son of our motherland.
Kisi bhi siyasi jamaat, any political group of Kashmir never brought the awe-inspiring tale of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani before the people.
When I think of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani, these words come to my mind. Ek Gumnaam Hero, Ek Gumnaam Mujahid.
What We Must Remember
Naam Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani
Umar – Unees saal
Sakina – Baramulla
The age in which a young man is filled with a thousand desires and longings. Jis umar mein hazarazon khwahishen aur hasratein hoti hain. In that young age, Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani had chosen to ally with National Conference.
What was the reason that he chose to identify himself with National Conference? The reason was that at that time, NC was the political party which had the clear vision that Kashmir’s future was with democratic and inclusive India. Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani wanted to utilize his abilities, his strengths in the service of the nation.
My ardent wish is that from Kashmir, the name of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani should travel and spread to the farthest corners of our beloved nation. In that golden space where the name of the most beloved and treasured martyrs of our nation is written, the name of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani should be written in that same space
Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani could not live so long that he would devote long years of his life to building the Kashmir of his dreams. Instead, he flashed like a comet across the sky. And in that single flash of comet in which he sacrificed his life for the service of India, our nation, he became immortal in the memory of his nation.
He Used His Hot Blood To Water The Mitti Of The Nation
Maqbool Sherwani was not a name. Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani was an inqilaab. He used his hot young blood to water the mitti of his beloved nation India. For so many decades after 1947, Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani remained a gumnaam mujahid who sacrificed his life in the service of his nation.
The comet flashed across the sky. The comet flashed into oblivion. But the Almighty knew of his unparalleled sacrifice. The Almighty brought this comet back into public memory.
My Sheir For Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani
I have written a sheir for our people of India and for our government in the memory of our great hero, Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani. I want to share this sheir with you all.

Ye bata ki kafila kyun luta
Humein rehzaron se gila nahin
Teri rehbari ka sawaal hai

Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani Saved Our Children, Our Women
Today, everybody in Kashmir is aware that Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani stood in the face of death and lay down his life so that thousands of children of Kashmir would not get yateem. He laid down his life so that our mothers and our sisters in Kashmir would not be widowed.
The Pakistani tribal raiders were mercilessly killing their people. The Army of our nation was arriving to protect Kashmir. Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani gave up his life to offer that valuable time to the Army to mobilize and mount the attack on the Pakistani raiders.
A Fitting Tribute To The Hero
A shayar has said this beautiful sheir which Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani may say to us Indians.
Hamara Khoon Bhi Shamil Hai Tazayaan-e-Gulistaan Main
Hamain Bhi Yaad Kar Lena Chaman Main Jb Bahar Aaye..!
Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani became the protector of the children of Kashmir. Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani became the protector of our mothers and sisters in Kashmir. Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani was tortured to death by the Pakistani tribal raiders. But did he waver from his service of the nation? No. He did not waver. He remained steadfast and became a martyr.
For decades, everybody forgot about him. But today, the entire Kashmir knows that the name of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani should be written in golden letters on our horizons.
Our Beloved Army Revived His Legend
It is our beloved Indian Army who brought Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani out of the folds of history where he was hidden. They brought forth his heroic sacrifice before the people. They told the people what this amazing hero stood for. Today, we are all celebrating Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani as we should. We shall always celebrate this brave and courageous son of our soil.
Every child of our motherland, every child of our beloved nation should be told of the heroic tale of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani so that he is inspired by the same ideals. Learning from Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani, every child of our nation should be ready to do his utmost to protect the aan, baan, shaan of our nation.
My ardent wish is that from Kashmir, the name of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani should travel and spread to the farthest corners of our beloved nation. In that golden space where the name of the most beloved and treasured martyrs of our nation is written, the name of Shaheed Maqbool Sherwani should be written in that same space.
