Jammu and Kashmir, especially the valley of Kashmir is known world over for its delicious and nutritious dry and other kinds of fruits.
This land has the honor of cultivating the most delicious and rich in nutrition fruits for centuries now. There was a time when fruit sector of the valley had not taken the shape of an industry and it was not a source of livelihood for the people of this beautiful land. Decades ago when we started producing surplus dry and other kinds of fruits, our fruit sector took shape of an industry and for thousands of households it became a source of income at the same time.
Jammu and Kashmir has, as per the data, a fruit industry worth thirty eight thousand crores and this sector has been giving a respectable livelihood to a vast chunk of our population.
For past few years our fruit industry is under a constant strain and ever since the advent of novel corona virus, the strain is increasing in its magnitude of this stress is increasing with every passing day. When Covid resulted in a worldwide lockdown, our fruit could not be transported to the markets and hence our growers had to suffer huge financial losses. Post covid lockdown period world witnessed a huge hike in the prices of almost all the essentials but to the dismay of our farming community, the prices of our fruits have dropped drastically. On the other hand the raw materials used by our farmers have gone up beyond expectations and this scenario is causing a huge stress in the industry. The prices of apple boxes have gone upto a hundred and fifteen rupees from eighty rupees while as the prices of apple in the national market are dwindling day by day.
Our people especially the farming community is now looking towards the LG administration and if this issue is taken seriously, our farmers and traders associated with the fruit trade can have a sigh of relief.
